Orthography Promotion
According to census 2011, there are 123 Mother Tongue languages spoken in Nepal. Some of these languages have developed Orthography but they have not been promoted among the community while most of these languages do not have Orthography at all. Hence, HIS Nepal develops and conducts Orthography Promotion activities among these languages.
After the orthography is finalized for a language, two local facilitators are trained to lead orthography promotion classes in their language area. They conduct two day classes to give an introduction on how to read and write their mother tongue to the local people. As the participants are already fluent readers of Nepali, they are not learning literacy skills per se, but instead they learn how to apply their literacy skills to their own mother tongue. These classes have been proven very popular and effective.
